Surface Preparation
Proper surface preparation is critical for coating adhesion and long-term court performance.
New Asphalt: Allow new asphalt to cure for a minimum of 14 days before application.
New Concrete: Allow new concrete to cure for a minimum of 30 days.
Concrete must have a light-to-medium broom finish. Smooth concrete
should be mechanically prepared, such as by shot blasting, to provide
the necessary surface texture.
New concrete must also be acid etched and thoroughly washed. Never allow acid to dry on the concrete surface.
Repair Cracks
Remove dirt, vegetation, and loose
material from cracks using a screwdriver, wire brush, or other suitable
tool. Clean cracks with water and allow them to dry thoroughly.
Fill cracks up to 1" wide with a suitable TCS Acrylic Crack Filler and allow the repair to dry completely before proceeding. Drying time will vary depending on crack width and depth.
Clean the Court
Sweep away dirt and loose debris.
Scrub oil, gasoline, and other contaminated areas with household
detergent and water. Thoroughly rinse the entire court and allow it to
dry before applying surfacing materials.
Mixing Instructions
TCS Court Resurfacer With Sand: Add 2 gallons of water to every 5-gallon container and mix thoroughly.
PicklePlay Base: Do not add water. Shake the selected TCS Tint before use, add the required tint to every pail of PicklePlay Base, and mix thoroughly.
A drill and paddle mixer are recommended for complete mixing. A minimum 9-amp mud-mixer-type drill is recommended.
Three-Color Pickleball Court Application
For a typical three-color PicklePlay court:
-
Concrete surfaces only: Apply 1 coat of TCS Concrete Primer/Bonder using a short-nap paint roller. Primer is not required on asphalt.
-
Apply 1 coat of TCS Court Resurfacer With Sand using a soft rubber squeegee. Add 2 gallons of water to every 5-gallon container before application.
-
Apply 2 coats of PicklePlay Base in the selected outside court color over the entire surface. Add TCS Tint and mix thoroughly. Do not add water.
-
After the outside color has dried completely, measure, mark, and tape the Service Box areas.
-
Apply 2 coats of the selected second PicklePlay color to the Service Boxes over the outside color.
-
After the Service Box color has dried, measure, mark, and tape the Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen).
-
Apply 2 coats of the selected third PicklePlay color to the Non-Volley Zone over the previously coated surface.
-
Allow each coat to dry completely before applying additional coatings or playing lines.
A 50–60 durometer soft rubber squeegee is recommended for applying TCS Court Resurfacer and PicklePlay Base.
Professional Squeegee Application
Avoid applying acrylic court coatings when the pavement is excessively hot. In hot weather, application after approximately 11:00 AM can cause the coating to dry too rapidly, resulting in streaking and poor material flow.
Maintain an 8–12" wide pile of material
ahead of the squeegee. When adding more coating, pour directly into the
center of the existing pile rather than in front of or behind it.
When using a 36" Sport Squeegee,
use approximately the first third of the blade to push the material
forward. The remaining two-thirds should glide over the freshly coated
surface. Hold the squeegee at a slight angle, similar to a snowplow.
If ridges develop behind the
trailing portion of the blade, apply additional downward pressure or
slow your pace to reduce the amount of material left on the surface.
Playing Line Installation
Always use white chalk for court layout. Red and blue chalk can bleed through acrylic coatings and permanently stain the finished surface.
Measure the playing lines and mark the center of each line with a white colored pencil. Snap the layout using a white chalk line.
For professional-quality pickleball lines:
-
Mask the lines using a Line Taping Machine and high-quality, high-adhesion masking tape.
-
Apply 1 coat of TCS Line Primer using a roller or brush.
-
Allow the primer to dry to the touch.
-
Apply 1 coat of TCS Textured White Line Paint.
-
Allow the line paint to dry to the touch, then remove the masking tape.
Drying Time
Typical drying time is approximately 1–4 hours per coat, depending on temperature, humidity, shade, airflow, and other environmental conditions.
Allow every coat to dry completely before recoating, masking additional color areas, or installing playing lines.
Weather & Application Conditions
For best results:
-
Surface and air temperatures must be at least 55°F and rising
-
Do not apply if temperatures are expected to fall below 55°F within 24 hours
-
Avoid application on excessively hot court surfaces
-
Do not apply when rain is imminent or forecast within 24 hours
-
In areas with evening dew or fog, begin coating in the morning
-
Stop coating by approximately 3:00 PM when early evening moisture is expected
Rain, dew, or fog contacting the coating before it has dried can damage or wash off freshly applied material.
Coverage
One gallon of PicklePlay Base covers approximately 90–100 sq. ft., depending on pavement porosity and surface texture.
A 5-gallon pail typically covers approximately 450–500 sq. ft. per coat.
Because the Three Color Kit uses
separate coatings for the outside area, Service Boxes, and Non-Volley
Zone, total material requirements depend on the court dimensions and
selected color layout.
Clean Up & Storage
Wash tools and application equipment with water before the material dries.
Do not freeze. Do not store below 50°F. Store containers tightly closed and upright. Keep out of direct sunlight and away from temperatures exceeding 100°F.
Precautions
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
Do not take internally. If swallowed, contact a physician immediately.
In case of eye contact, flush immediately with water for 15 minutes and
contact a physician.
Absorb spills and dispose of material in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
