Surface Preparation
Proper preparation is essential for good adhesion and long-term court performance.
New asphalt: Allow the asphalt to cure for a minimum of 14 days before applying the surfacing system.
New concrete: Allow concrete to cure for a minimum of 30 days.
Concrete should have a light-to-medium broom finish. Smooth concrete
must be mechanically prepared, such as by shot blasting, to create the
proper surface profile.
New concrete must also be acid etched and thoroughly washed. Do not allow the acid solution to dry on the concrete.
Repair Cracks and Low Areas
Remove dirt, vegetation, and loose
material from cracks using a screwdriver, wire brush, or other suitable
tool. Clean the cracks with water and allow them to dry completely.
Fill cracks up to 1" wide with a suitable TCS Acrylic Crack Filler and allow repairs to dry before proceeding. Drying time will vary depending on the width and depth of the repair.
Clean the Court Surface
Sweep away all dirt and loose
debris. Remove oil, grease, and other contaminants with an appropriate
detergent and water. Rinse the entire surface thoroughly and allow it to
dry completely before applying surfacing materials.
Mixing Instructions
Proper mixing is critical for consistent color and application.
TCS Court Resurfacer With Sand: Add 2 gallons of water to each 5-gallon container and mix thoroughly before application.
PicklePlay Base: Do not add water. Shake TCS Tint before use, add the required TCS Tint to every pail of PicklePlay Base, and mix thoroughly.
A drill and paddle mixer are recommended for complete mixing. A minimum 9-amp mud-mixer-type drill is recommended.
Recommended Application System
For a typical one-color pickleball court resurfacing project:
-
Concrete surfaces only: Apply 1 coat of TCS Concrete Primer/Bonder using a short-nap roller. Concrete Primer is not required on asphalt surfaces.
-
Apply 1 coat of TCS Court Resurfacer With Sand using a soft rubber squeegee. Add 2 gallons of water to each 5-gallon container before application.
-
Apply 2 coats of PicklePlay Base over the entire playing surface using a soft rubber squeegee. Add the selected TCS Tint and mix thoroughly. Do not add water to PicklePlay Base.
-
Allow every coat to dry completely before applying the next coat or installing playing lines.
A 50–60 durometer soft rubber squeegee is recommended for resurfacer and PicklePlay Base applications.
Professional Squeegee Application
Avoid applying acrylic court
coatings when the pavement is excessively hot. As a general guideline,
applications later than approximately 11:00 AM may become difficult in hot conditions because the coating can dry too quickly, causing streaking and poor material flow.
Maintain an 8–12" wide pile of material
ahead of the squeegee. When adding additional coating, pour it into the
center of the existing pile rather than ahead of or behind it.
Use approximately the first third of a 36" Sport Squeegee
to move the material forward. The remaining two-thirds should glide
over the freshly coated area. Hold the squeegee at a slight angle,
similar to a snowplow.
If ridges develop behind the
trailing portion of the blade, reduce the amount of material being left
on the surface by applying additional downward pressure or slowing your
pace.
Playing Line Installation
Always use white chalk when laying out court lines. Red or blue chalk can bleed through acrylic coatings and permanently stain the finished surface.
Measure the playing lines and mark the center of each line with a white colored pencil. Snap the layout using a white chalk line.
For professional results:
-
Mask the lines using a Line Taping Machine and high-quality, high-adhesion masking tape.
-
Apply 1 coat of TCS Line Primer with a roller or brush and allow it to dry to the touch.
-
Apply 1 coat of TCS Textured White Line Paint over the primer.
-
Allow the line paint to dry to the touch and remove the masking tape.
Drying Time
Typical drying time is approximately 1–4 hours per coat, depending on temperature, humidity, shade, airflow, and surface conditions.
Allow each coat to dry completely before applying additional coatings or playing lines.
Weather & Application Conditions
Surface and air temperatures must be at least 55°F and rising. Do not apply when temperatures are expected to fall below 55°F within 24 hours.
Do not apply if rain is imminent or forecast within 24 hours.
In areas where evening dew or fog is common, begin coating in the morning and stop by approximately 3:00 PM so the coating has sufficient time to dry.
Avoid coating excessively hot pavement, which can cause rapid drying, streaking, and poor material flow.
Clean Up & Storage
Wash application tools with water before the material dries.
Do not freeze. Do not store PicklePlay Base below 50°F. Keep containers tightly closed, upright, and protected from direct sunlight and temperatures exceeding 100°F.
